Born in 1840 in Penn. In 1850 Federal Census for Westmoreland Co., Penn he is found as 12 yr old living in Derry Twsp. as a laborer on the John and Ann May farm. Also listed as laborers are Issac Artist age 60 and Weller Artist age 19. On 1856 Iowa state census for Jackson Twsp., Benton Co., Iowa Daniel is found as 17 yr old living with his brother (?) Issac 38 yrs old and his wife Elizabeth Age 32 and their family. On 1860 Federal Census for Vinton, Benton Co., Iowa Daniel is found as 20 yr old farm hand on farm of Jacob S. Hunt. Enlisted June 24, 1861 as 21 yr old 4th Sergt. in Co. G, 5th Iowa Infantry. Mustered July 15, 1861 at Camp Warren, Burlington, Iowa. Promoted to 3rd Sergt. Jan. 9, 1862. Promoted to 1st Sergt. Sept. 4, 1862. K.I.A. May 16, 1863 at Battle of Champion Hill, Ms. and buried on the battlefied the next day.
