Enlisted as a 23 yr.old resident of Peedee, Cedar Co., Ia. in Co. A, 5th Iowa Infantry. Joined the regiment in the field and quartered in Confederate Colonel Parson's home in Jefferson City, Mo.on Aug. 24, 1861 and mustered in. Left sick in the hospital with measles at Otterville, Mo. Oct. 21, 1861. Discharged for disability May 20, 1862 in the field near Corinth, Ms. Enlisted July 12, 1862 in Co. A, 22nd Iowa Infantry. Married Martha J. Hunt in Johnson Co., Iowa July 27, 1862. Rejected for sickness in 22nd Iowa on Sept. 10, 1862.Enlisted Aug.15, 1863, Mustered in Aug. 24, 1863 as 3rd Sergeant in Co. K, 8th Iowa Cavalry. Mustered out Aug. 13, 1865 at Macon, Ga. Listed as living in Muscatine, Ia. on 1887 and 1897 reunion rosters. Listed as widowed "Elevator Man"on death record. Buried Sept. 10, 1909 in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Chicago, Ill.
