Of eleven children, Don was the tenth child of Leonard Rush "L.R." Hamrick (1885-1952) and Permelia Angaline "Mealy" Dennis (1889-1965) born in Clarendon, Texas. On January 2, 1949, he married Drucella Dorothea Sargent, daughter of Lugusta Sargent (1901-1994) and Lola May McBee (1903-1985), when she was 17. The couple had five children: Farrell Lee, Elaine Darnell, Eugenia Donnell, Ila Bernice and Clay Randall.

He moved with his family to Arizona in 1955 and to the Superior area in 1977. An iron worker, he had worked with Iron Workers Union Local 75 before retiring in 1975. He died July 17, 2004, at his home in Superior, Arizonia, at the age of 75. He was preceded in death by his parents and ten siblings. He was survived by Drucella Hamrick and their five children.
