|Death: ||Feb., 1854|
Frederick married Anna Morse. Their children were all born in New York: Cynthia, Mary, Frederick, John, Martha, Reuben and Aaron. The family had moved to Wisconsin.
Frederick was unjustly lynched by a mob after defending himself. The Milwaukee Sentinel from March 7, 1954 reported on stories from 100 years ago, including the following:
MARCH 7, 1854
BERLIN, Wis.-In one of the most horrible chapters in Wisconsin's history, two men were shot dead about 30 miles west of here and the other was lynched and hung. The lynched man, Frederick Cartwright, shot the others while defending himself from the mob of more than 100 persons who attacked him. We hope the County of Waushara will vindicate its good name by bringing the offenders to justice.
It was later reported that "To the shame of the good name of Waushara County, the human fiends who participated in this murderous outrage against law and right were never punished nor even prosecuted, though many if not all of them were known; but some of them met death by violence."
