Addie was fatally injured in an accident. Her sisters, Trevie and Bonnie were on a thick (4' long) oak swing that was suspended in a large tree. It was being pushed by older brothers. Addie, 7 yrs. old, ran into the swing's path and the heavy wooden corner struck her in the forehead. Her brothers carried her to the house where their mother, LeNora, found that a piece of Addie's skull had broken off. LeNora sent the children out to find the missing piece of skull in the yard.
Addie was lying unconscious all the while. The piece of bone was found, cleaned and LeNora held in in place on Addie's forehead with brown paper and vinegar and bandaging. LeNora, being a midwife, carried her own bag for medical needs, though the remedies came mostly from the kitchen and garden.
Addie never recovered consciousness and died a short time later.
Addie was named by her father William "Bill" Jasper McNew after Addie Hightower. A member of the William Hightower family of Grayson Co. TX, who helped raise Bill McNew.
This story was related to the submitter by Addie's sister, Bonnie L. McNew, in 1990.
