Services will be 1 p.m., Tuesday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Wayne Hardison officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens.
A native of Mt. Pleasant, he was the son of Mrs. Janie McKissick Vernon of Columbia and the late Ollie Vernon. His wife Alberta Estes died August 15, 1993. He served as a city of Columbia commissioner for eight years and was a member of the Columbia Power Board. For many years he was active in Little League Baseball and was a member of Columbia Civitan Club and Greymere Church of Christ.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include one daughter, Mrs. Ray (Vicki) Galloway of Columbia; one son David Vernon of Columbia; one sister, Mrs. Tom (Bettie) Sparkman of Columbia; two brothers, Carl Vernon of Port Arthur Texas and Jack Vernon of Columbia; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Vernon.
