Life began for Jack Vernon Bateson on Feb. 5, 1923, at Topeka, Kan., with parents John and N. Grace Bateson.

He moved to Harvard, Idaho, by age 6, where his dad found work with W.I. & M. as a railroad section foreman. Land for the Hilton-Bateson Park at Harvard was donated by the Bateson family.

Jack married Pearl Krogh in Pullman on Sept. 20, 1946. The couple have two daughters, Barbara Loomis of Clarkston, and Connie Ward of Tucson, Ariz. A granddaughter, Lori Chapman, lives in Lewiston.

A warmer climate motivated a move to the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley in 1952. Soon after, work started at Potlatch, Corp., and continued through 1965 as a lift-truck driver. He was a union shop steward representative for the workers.

In the 1960s he sought a new work career as a TV technician for Orin's Electronics in Clarkston after a self-taught course. Fun was his hobby of flying model planes or riding in his boat on the Snake River. In the 1970-80s, TV repair continued at Steiner's in Lewiston. Entertainment was buying new cars, riding his motorcycle or driving in his motorhome. Retirement came in 1995 from Lewis-Clark Metropolitan Service of Lewiston. You may have seen Jack or Pearl playing casino slots in recent years.

Jack served as a medic for the U.S. Army during World War II on the Pacific front in Okinawa and Saipan. He died peacefully at home with his wife of 66 years present on Nov. 11, 2012, Veterans Day.
