Birth: Sep. 15, 1885
Kalkaska County
Michigan, USA
Death: 1966

When Alice was very young she was run over by a wagon in Kalkaska, Michigan and suffered bladder problems all of her life. She often talked about her mother making mattresses out of sacks, feathers and horse hair for them to sleep on.

Specific information on how Alice lived as a young girl is really not known. However, her father William Grove was always trying to strike it rich but never made it. He was first in the steel industry in Pittsburgh during the 1860, 1870 years. Then in the lumber industry in Kalkaska, Michigan during the 1880, 1890 periods. In the end he was a truck farmer "Huckster" in the Washington DC area in the early 1900s. He probably made a fair living which provided Alice with a somewhat better life than her husband Clarence had as a boy. She was smart as a whip and knew how to make a buck even in the worst of times. This knowledge must have come from her fathers struggles and mistakes.

Occupation: Rental Property.

Alice (Grove) Phelps my maternal Grandmother was a special women. She was a redhead with light brown eyes and a temper. While I was growing up she was my port in many storms, always there when I needed help. I lived with her as much as I did with my parents. She once told mom that she loved to bake apple pie just so she could watch me eat it. As far as I was concerned she was the best cook in the world. She also loved to cook and eat Maryland Blue Crabs and fish, guess it was her Maryland background. Any time I caught fish she would cook them and put them on newspaper on her kitchen table. Her and I would eat fish, drink beer and talk for hours.

She is thought of often and truly missed by me.
