Alonzo was the son of Eliphalet M. and Jane T. (Pierce) Martin. Eliphalet was from Appleton, Maine. Jane was from South Thomaston, Maine. Alonzo was born in Appleton and joined Company H, 4th Maine Infantry, based in Rockland at the start of the Civil War. He fought successfully at the First Battle of Bull Run, but was later shot in the left side during McClellan's ill-fated Peninsula Campaign in fighting near Williamsburg, VA. Later, he was transferred to the 38th NY volunteers before being discharged at Ft. McHenry, Baltimore in 1862. A gravemarker was installed on October 23, 2013. His first wife was Cordelia Shaw of Winterport. She passed away young. His second wife was Naomi C. Sprague, daughter of Wellington and Elizabeth (Gray) Sprague of Grand Manan, New Brunswick, Canada, Milbridge, Maine and Bangor. Lillian E. (Martin) Sprague, who married Emanuel C. Sprague was also a daughter of Alonzo and Naomi. Alonzo was my great, great grandfather.
