He left his wife, Frances E. (Lueras) Bachant; a son, Leo R. Bachant of Holden; a daughter, Kathleen A. Healy of Millbury; two stepsons, Roger D. Anyon of Bridgewater and Jeffrey S. Anyon of Brockton; three stepdaughters, Ann H. Houston and Cheryl L. Moylan, both of Worcester, and Elaine L. Fournier of Uxbridge; three brothers, Ernest D., Paul S. and Albert J. Bachant, all of Worcester; 18 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nephews and nieces. His first wife, Catherine R. (Grace) Bachant, died in 1961.
He was born in Lynn, son of Wilbur T. and Ethel R. (Henry) Bachant, and lived many years in East Millbury. Mr. Bachant was an equipment foreman at Norton Co. in Worcester, where he worked for more than 34 years, retiring in 1975. He was also a captain for 13 years in the Millbury Fire Department, with Engine Co. 3 in East Millbury, where he served for 30 years.
Mr. Bachant was a member of the Democratic Town Committee for 45 years, and was its chairman for 22 years. He served for 16 years on the former Local Board of Public Welfare, and was a sewer commissioner for 21 years. He was also chairman of the committee that oversaw construction of East Millbury Playground.
Mr. Bachant was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Worcester, and committee chairman of its Boy Scout Troop 44. He was a member of the Millbury Old Timers and Clinton Lodge of Elks. He was financial secretary of the Franco-American Club in Millbury for 28 years.
On Oct. 1,1989, Mr. Bachant would have received the first Leo P. Bachant Award for outstanding service to the Democratic party.
The funeral was held from Alred Roy & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Hammond St., Worcester, with a Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1290 Grafton St., Worcester.
