Carmen was the daughter of a newspaper executive. She had been called "Chacha" since she was a child and as a young, athletic woman, the nickname stuck. At age 24 she was living in Mexico City, juggling a full-time job along with daily practice sessions as a diver of Olympic potential. That year she met future husband Lazaro Barrera at a dance. They married in May of 1949.
After the death of her husband Carmen spent the next 20 years of her life at her La Costa, Carlsbad, California home where she and Lazaro had shared their lives during summers and special holidays. Carmen worked for 13 years as a volunteer in the pediatric ward of Scripps Hospital in Encinitas, California where she was a Spanish-language translator.
Carmen was survived by two sons, Larry and Albert; a daughter, Blanca (Uriza); and five grandchildren.
