In Washington County, Tenn., Zilla Bayless married James Acton in 1822. At the time of their marriage Zilla was 19; James, 32.

In 1850 (census data), James and Zilla were living in the Bogard Community of Cocke County, Tenn. on a farm provided by Zilla's father, Daniel Bayless, who had purchased the land but remained a resident of Washington County. Their children at that time were Martha, Martin, Elizabeth, Art, Jennie, Priscilla, Albert and Emeline. By 1950, their oldest son, William Daniel Acton, had already left home and married (Harriet Sisk).

In 1870 (census data), Zilla, a widow, was living in Cocke County with James (40), Elizabeth (39), Art (37), Sarah (32), Hardy (18) and Albert (6). Relationships were not noted, but James (apparently James Jr.) was listed head of the household. Albert appears to have been his son.

Zilla's sister, Elizabeth, married William Duncan. They were parents of Jim Duncan, who married Aaron Bryant's daughter (Tarlton Bryant's granddaughter) Elizabeth. (Jim and Elizabeth's obituaries are posted on Tarlton Bryant’s memorial.)
