John Stewart Jones was born and grew up near the Missouri River in the State of Missouri. He was enumerated in Dallas County, Missouri in the 1840 census, married with several children. He was In Lawrence County, Arkansas by 1860. Households of married sons, John Lee Jones and Charles Wesley Jones and married daughter, Lurane and spouse, Elijah Wilson, with Jones and Wilson grandchildren were nearby. His sons joined the Arkansas Calvary when the Civil War began. His oldest, John Lee Jones, died in 1864 and is buried in the National Cemetery, Fayetteville, Arkansas. Also during the war, John Stewart Jones's wife, Elizabeth Frances Lee Jones, his daughter, Lurane and husband, Elijah Wilson, daughter-in-law, wife of son, John Lee Jones, and Caroline, the little daughter of son, Charles Wesley Jones, all died. John Stewart Jones was enumerated in his own household with orphaned grandchildren in the 1870 census of Lawrence County, Arkansas. Son, Charles Wesley Jones, was nearby with his family.
