Martha Jane Keating was born In December of 1850, Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana, probably after her father was killed that year. She had two older brothers, John Richard Keating age 5 and James Wooten Keating age 3. Her widowed mother married Toliver F. Martin and the family migrated to the Rusk County area of Texas.
1860 TEXAS CENSUS, Rusk County - Martin, T. F. head age 34; A. M. wife age 35; Keating children, John age 15; James age 13; Martha age 10 and Martin children, Emma age 8; Dealy age 6; William age 4 and infant dau age 1/12 (Nancy F.)
1870 TEXAS CENSUS, Rusk County - Martha Jane's stepfather was deceased and Martha age 20, was enumerated in household of widowed mother, Anna Marie Martin, and four Martin half siblings.
1872 - Martha Jane Keating married William M. Britton on March 21,1872, in Panola County, Texas, recorded in Marriage Book #67.
1880 TEXAS CENSUS, Rusk County - Britton, Wm. M. head age 28; Martha wife age 27; children, Mary A. age 7; Adele age 5; Ollie D. age 5/12; Martin, George age 24, bro-in-law (William George Martin, Martha Jane's half brother).
1900 TEXAS CENSUS, Rusk County - Britton, Wm. M. head age 50; Martha J., wife, age 50, "given birth to 7 children, 6 living"; children: Adele age 19; John M. age 17; Emma age 15; Nannie age 13; Willie age 10;
Next household son, Ollie D. Britton, with wife, Rena, and dau, Gladsis.
1900 - Martha Jane Keating Britton died later that year after she was enumerated in the Texas Census.
1910 TEXAS CENSUS, Rusk County - Britton, William M. head age 62, "widowed 10 years"; children, Emma age 26; Nancy F. age 24; William A. age 22. Households of sons nearby - Britton, Ollie D. and Britton, John M. with wives and children.
Martha Jane's spouse, William M. Britton, never remarried, raised their children and their single daughter, Emma, stayed with her father until her death in 1923.
