Death: Aug. 18, 1859

Eleanor "Nellie" Ward was born in the Bridal Creek area of Grayson County, Virginia, in the cabin of her parent's nestled in a remote valley of Buck Mountain. The cabin of her brother and his family stood nearby. Nellie married Issac Newton Rimer, the oldest son in a large family, who lived with his parents on a farm in the area. Isaac bought a few acres of land from his father and the couple settled there. When a baby boy arrived they named him for his maternal grandfather. Nellie died when their little son was about two years old and she was buried in her family's burial ground on a ridge of the mountain high above the cabins in the valley. Her grave is marked with a rock slab on which the initials "N. R." and date of death "18 Aug 1859" are roughly hand carved on the stone which this researcher was able to decipher many years later by rubbing it with shaving cream. The headstone is located toward the back of the cemetery and to the side behind the headstones of Nellie's parents and other relatives.
NOTE: The little cemetery is located on private land some distance from the nearest residence and only reached on foot or by 4 Wheel Drive. A friendly neighbor at the bottom of the mountain, who had a gate key, volunteered his pickup and services. We passed through the locked gate and up several miles of winding, washed out road to the top of the mountain. The cemetery was fenced and appeared cared for in spite of the isolated location. It was Easter Sunday 1999 and an experience to remember. We had found "Nellie", the mother of little Enoch Noah Rimer, half brother of our Granny Mattox (Mary Levina Rimer Mattox).

Rest in peace, Nellie. Your little son, Enoch Noah Rimer, grew up to be a strong, fine man with a wife and children of his own. You would've been proud.
