BERRIGAN, Ellen Patricia (Hanley) Widow of James E. Berrigan entered into rest on March 6, 2013. Ellen was born in Roxbury, MA the daughter of Delia (Ward) Hanley and Timothy J. Hanley. She grew up with six brothers and sisters in an Irish Catholic neighborhood. From her mother Delia, who was born in Ireland, and her father Timothy, a first generation American, she learned to be proud of her Irish heritage and to always stand up for what she believed in. Ellen was outgoing, enjoying day trips with her girlfriends to Nantasket Beach and shopping at Filene's Basement. In 1943, as World War II raged, Ellen volunteered for the newly established Marine Corps Women's Reserve. This was a controversial decision at the time, prompting her parish priest to make a special visit to the family home to dissuade her from joining. Ellen was firm, if her brothers were serving, she would serve. If men could serve, women could serve. With her parent's blessing, she joined the Marine Corps, eventually earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the war, she worked at the Veteran's Administration Outpatient Clinic on School St. in downtown Boston. She married James E. Berrigan in 1952, and had one child, her son James. The family lived in Dorchester and later in Hingham. Ellen took adult education classes throughout her life. Topics of interest included meal planning, cooking, and sewing. Like many women during the 1970's she went back to work, again for the Veteran's Administration in the Boston Federal building. During her lunch breaks, she would explore downtown Boston and Faneuil Hall Marketplace. She was especially fond of the Boston Chipyard's chocolate chip cookies. As her parents aged, she helped to care for them, arranging a schedule for family members who stayed overnight with Delia and Timothy. She also arranged for home health aides and nursing care. She frequently acted as a go between for her nieces, smoothing out disagreements and difficulties they had with their mothers. The Sarge was a good negotiator. After retirement she moved with her husband from Hingham to West Dennis where she enjoyed daily walks, window shopping, and visiting local attractions such as the Kennedy Museum in Hyannis. She also enjoyed eating out at area restaurants, both plain and fancy. A&W hot dogs with french fries was a favorite meal. She considered ice cream to be one of the four food groups. She was a beloved sister, wife, aunt, mother and grandmother. She was a trailblazer as one of the first women Marines, and a member of The Greatest Generation. She will be missed by all who loved her. She leaves her son, James E. Berrigan, daughter in law Jane (Hollis) Berrigan and two grandchildren, Timothy J. Berrigan and Ellen K. Berrigan of York, ME. She is also survived by her brother in law, Robert Berrigan of Plymouth and Marco Island, Florida, her sister in law Marie (Fusco) Hanley of Medford, and many loving nieces and nephews. Sister of the late Joseph Patrick of Roxbury, who died in infancy, the late Margaret Sullivan of West Roxbury, the late Catherine Murphy of Dorchester, the late Joseph Patrick of Boston and Boca Raton, Florida, the late Martin of Hyannis, the late John of Medford, and the late Edward of Roxbury. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, April 21st from 2-4 pm at Morris, O'Connor & Blute Funeral Home 678 Main St. Harwich Center. A funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, April 22 at 10 am at Holy Trinity Church, Route 28 West Harwich. Burial will follow at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Notes of comfort and sympathy may be made to her family at
