Joseph M Kirk was the son of John Kirk (1789-1860) and Clara Marcum Kirk (1803-?).

He served as a Captain in the 39th KY Regiment (Union) which fought in the Battle of Salyersville, the Battle of Saltville, & the Second Battle of Saltville.

His children with his wife, Nancy Jane Dingiss, were -

James Dingess Kirk Sr. b. July-1845.
Alwilda A. Kirk b. c 1847, m. ---, Andy Spradlin.
Lafayette Kirk b. c 1849, d. before-1860.
John Lloyd Kirk b. July-1852.
Mary Jane "Polly" Kirk b. 07-April-1854.
William Ratcliff Kirk b. 04-Aug.1856.
Joseph Marcum Kirk Jr. b. 11-Nov.1859.
Thomas Sherman Kirk b. Aug.1864.
Congressman Andrew Jackson Kirk Sr. b. March-1866.

His site of interrment is suppositional and likely incorrect, but close.
