Winfield was born in Illinois, farmed with his father, then entered the University of Iowa and was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity before being inducted into the Navy June 5th, 1918. Never seeing service he then returned to the U of Iowa before attending the University of Chicago and earning his Bachelors of Philosophy in 1921. A wise investor, he married Kirk Algeo and the couple lived in Chicago and travelled. Kirk passed on 2 years after the birth of their only child.
After Kirk's death aged 32, Winfield married Dorothy but this marriage was unhappy and they divorced. Winfield then took their daughter to live on his father's farm in Iowa. Disliking farm work and continuing to invest his money, he married Mary Abney in about 1951. This union produced no children and Winfield was a gentleman farmer near Yetter Iowa, spending summers in Arizona, until he passed in 1987.
He was a kindly and jolly grandfather who always had a joke or something to laugh about.
