ROBERT E. HITCHEN, 69, of Margate, died Wednesday at the Atlantic City Medical Center City Division after a brief illness.
Mr. Hitchen was the former vice president of sales for Resorts International Hotel Casino.
He began his career in the hotel industry more than 45 years ago. He was the vice president of sales and marketing for the Sheraton Deauville Hotel & Motel, the Colony Motel, and held similar positions with the Traymore Hotel and Ambassador Hotels of Atlantic City.
Mr. Hitchen was past president of the Hotel/Motel Sales Manager Association, and was a key player in landing many citywide conventions.
He was a member of the Ventnor-Margate Lions Club, and the Margate Log Cabin.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Hitchen attended Pleasantville High School and Pennsylvania State University, where he played football and played in the 1948 Cotton Bowl. Born in Philadelphia, he was a longtime Atlantic County resident. He is survived by two sons, Robert J. and Richard J., both of Margate; three daughters, Cathy and Nancy K., both of Margate, and Donna Lu Rando of Absecon; his father, F. James of Absecon; one sister, Marilyn Brown of Absecon; and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1 p.m. Saturday at the Blessed Sacrament Chruch, 11 N. Kenyon Ave., Margate, where friends may call one hour before services.Burial will be in Laurel Memorial Park, Pomona. Arrangements are by the George H. Wimberg Funeral Home of Ventnor and Linwood.
