Born July 1, 1924 in Ridge Farm, Illinois to Martha Smith (1901 Bright Shade, Kentucky – 1979 Mahomet, Illinois). The identity of Victoria's father was never revealed, but Victoria considered Asbury Alexander Smith (1880 Humrick, Illinois – 1955 Ridge Farm, IL) her "father figure" (after the 1929 death of her grandmother Edith and step-grandfather Ben Wombles relocated to Paris, Illinois). Martha and Victoria lived with Asbury Alexander Smith on his farm cottage in Ridge Farm, until Asbury's death in 1955.
At age 29, Victoria was introduced to a co-worker's cousin, Robert Shirley, and on June 17, 1954 they married. The newlyweds lived a very short time with Martha and Asbury, until they established their own home. Over the next 3 years, Victoria had 1 daughter and 2 sons, all raised in Homer, Illinois. Mother Martha often lived with the family until her death in 1979.
Victoria's primary concern, and greatest joy was her family.
Victoria developed a brain tumor, which led to an eventual stroke and death in 1996. She is buried in the Shilo Cemetery in Mahomet, next to her mother Martha Smith. A place is waiting for her husband, Robert Eugene Shirley, next to his parents Lester Shirley and Lena Bell Stover and numerous Stover relatives.
