Thomas was born in Bucks County, PA, and as a child accompanied his family to Wayne County, IN, where he grew to young manhood. He married Uria Armstrong of Preble County, OH on April 6 1854, in Preble County and took her home to Wayne County, where their first two children were born. By 1858, they had removed to Highland County, OH where Uria's family had once lived. Their last three children were born there.
Thomas was a carpenter and moved frequently to obtain jobs. He was known to be a hard worker and was sought after for the quality of his work.
In May, 1864, at age 39, Thomas joined the Union Army. After his mustering out, he returned to his work as a carpenter. The family was living in Clinton County, OH when their third child, Mary Emma, died at age 7.
He began to suffer occasional bouts of disabling pain from his war service, but continued to work for years, until the pain finally became constant, and he was no longer able to work. He finally applied for a Veteran's Pension in order to support his wife and himself.
Thomas died in Madison Township, Highland County, OH on March 1 1895, after many years of slowly deteriorating health, which the US Army Pension Board determined to be a result of his military service.
