|Death: ||Aug. 14, 1894|
Emilie was a daughter of Capt. James Richard Starkey and Sarah Norburn, who had immigrated from England shortly after Minnesota became a state. She married Melvin Brooks Henderson on March 16, 1881 in St. Paul. Together they had a son, Melvin Starkey Henderson in 1883, and raised him on their successful farm. They also adopted her orphaned niece (of her sister Sarah), Mabel Thompson, who later tragically died of spinal meningitis in 1886. Emma herself died of Tuberculosis in 1894 and is buried in the Starkey family plot. Her headstone is no longer present (or visible).
Her son, Melvin, was mostly raised by Emma's only surviving sister, Eliza "Lila" Starkey and her husband, Edward Lancaster Drewry, in Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada and went on to become a distinguished Mayo Clinic surgeon who established the Orthopaedic Department there and co-founded the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
