Terjo Tapani Markkanen was born in Kotka, Kymenlaakso, Finland on the 24th of March 1934. His parents were Arvo Markkanen and his wife Ida, neé Rissanen. Terjo had one older sister and two younger brothers. He lived his first year in Kotka but soon afterwards the family moved to Lahti were Terjo's father Arvo had obtained a job. From Lahti they moved to Pello, Lappland in 1942 but Terjo lived there for only two years. In 1944 he moved to Kotka to lived with his grandparents Abel and Venla Markkanen.

Terjo was a telephone technician and radio operator in ocean liner by profession but he was also a Finnish politician and the chairman for Eteenpäin Osakeyhtiö which was a Finnish newspaper company.

Terjo met his forthcoming wife Seija Marita Halm in Lahti before he started working in ocean liner. They married on the 10th of January 1959 in Lahti and moved to Kotka in 1960.

Terjo Markkanen died on the 24th of July 2007 in Kotka aged 73. He was buried to Parikka Cemetery, Kotka, Kymenlaakso, Finland.
