When Jens Boesen Thorsted was born on 23 December 1847, in Snedsted, Vestervig, Denmark, his father, Jens Pedersen Thorsted (1815-1870)), was 32 and his mother, Ane Kirstine Jensdatter Boesen (1824-1868), was 23. He lived in Snedsted, Hassing, Thisted, Denmark for about 10 years. He died on 22 October 1868, in Ogden, Weber, Utah, at the age of 20, and was buried in Ogden, Weber, Utah.

Jens remained behind in New York, possibly until his mother's death, along with his youngest sister, Dorsine. When they continued on, it was with the Fred Anderson Company.
