James Lee "Tallman" Backstrom entered into eternal rest on Monday, May 6, 2013, at WM Jennings Bryan Dorn VAMC in Columbia.
Born in Chester County on April 16, 1943, he was the son of James Backstrom and Vinnie White Backstrom. He was a member of Mount Ararat AME Zion Church and attended school in Chester County. He was a Vietnam Marine, combat wounded, and received a Purple Heart. He served in the Chester National Guard for eight years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Jericho No. 10, where he advanced to a 33 degree and wishful master. He was the owner and operator of J&B Trucking Company along with his wife. He drove several years for other trucking companies before that.
He will be greatly missed by family and friends. Mr. Backstrom was preceded in death by one sister, Mattie Mae Backstrom; and one brother, John David Backstrom.
He leaves to cherish loving memories his wife, Rosa Massey-Backstrom; daughter, Erica Knox; three sisters, Minnie White, Mable (Rev. J.L. Darby) Darby and Janice Backstrom; three brothers, Roosevelt Backstrom, Richard Backstrom and Willie (Evette) Backstrom; one sister-in-law, Carolyn Backstrom; father-in-law, Robert Massey Jr.; six brothers-in-law, Robert (Harriet) Massey, Frederick Massey, Wilbur Massey, Ben (Felicia) Massey, Darryl Massey and Avery (Tasha) Massey; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many other family members and friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Backstrom will be Saturday, May 11, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Mount Ararat AME Zion Church in Richburg with the Rev. Ronnie Meeks officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Clemons-McCray Funeral Home.
Clemons-McCray Funeral Home is serving the family.
