Joel George Allen was born to Harvey and Louella (Hickel) Allen on Jan. 11, 1947, in Williston. Most of his younger years were spent growing up on a farm south of Ray. He attended a one room country school called Wunderlick until he was in ninth grade and continued his education at Ray High School, where he graduated with honors in 1965. He was a 1969 graduate of Minot State University with a double major in physical education and mathematics. While in college, Joel was a member for the Phi Sigma Pi Honor Society.

After graduating, Joel went on to teach and coach at Savage High School in Savage, Mont. He taught math and P.E. while also coaching boys' basketball and girls track. This was where he met and married Kathleen Reed (1974-95). In 1974, he left his position as a teacher and accepted a job with Knife River Coal Mining Company as a supervisor at the Savage mine. In February 1975, he was transferred to the Beulah mine where he spent a total of 26 years as a KRCM employee. During those 26 years, he was blessed with two sons, Dustin and Benjamin.

Joel was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Beulah. He served on the parish counsel on numerous occasions and he was also a church trustee, financial secretary, Eucharistic minister and lecter. After retiring from KRCM, Joel became the grounds keeper and maintenance person for the church. He was a CCD teacher for many years as well as a chaperone for the Steubenville Youth Conference. Joel was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and served as Grand Knight.

Joel was an active member of the Beulah community. He took every opportunity to help out when needed. He loved to drive the bus for school events and church functions and was able to reach out to the youth in the community. It was during this time he meet his "special angel," Darlene Schultz. From 2004 to the present, Joel remained as active as possible in the community. He and Darlene also loved to travel and were able to go on many great adventures. They were both avid Twins fans and loved to go to as many games as possible.

Joel never met a stranger. He was always making new friends and enjoyed visiting with anyone and everyone.

Joel is survived by his sons, Dustin (Trisha) Allen, Bismarck, and Benjamin (Cindy) Allen, Mandan; his grandson, Wyatt Allen; his brothers, Raymond (Karen) Allen, Terry Allen, and Lewis Allen, all of Williston, Lee (Rachel) Allen, Everett, Wash., and Neil Allen, Corvallis, Ore.; his sisters, Elizabeth (Paul) Carmody, Spring, Texas, and Connie (Steve) Doiel, Vancouver, Wash.; 32 nephews and nieces; special friend, Darlene Schultz, Beulah; and many dear friends.
