He was a 1969 graduate of Minot State University with a double major in physical education and mathematics. While in college, Joel was a member for the Phi Sigma Pi Honor Society.

After retiring from KRCM, Joel became the grounds keeper and maintenance person for the church. He was a CCD teacher for many years as well as a chaperone for the Steubenville Youth Conference. Joel was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and served as Grand Knight.
Joel was an active member of the Beulah community. He took every opportunity to help out when needed. He loved to drive the bus for school events and church functions and was able to reach out to the youth in the community. It was during this time he meet his "special angel," Darlene Schultz. From 2004 to the present, Joel remained as active as possible in the community. He and Darlene also loved to travel and were able to go on many great adventures. They were both avid Twins fans and loved to go to as many games as possible.
