He was a Hotel Keeper - Washington Hotel in 1881 in 71 Glasgow Road, Kirkintulloch, Scotland. The census for 1891 and 1901 show his occupation as hotel keeper of The Royal Oak Hotel in Denny, an old coaching inn located on the original north road, now the A872 , 7 miles south of Stirling.
