Chloe the ferret was born in Oklahoma. We got her in a pet store in Enid, Oklahoma, in 2000. Chloe was listed as a spayed, female, Sable.
We lived in Oklahoma at the time, but months later, we moved to Bucklin, Kansas, to be closer to my grandparents. We got a house, and Chloe found some way to get out of the house, and we were painting, etc. So Chloe went to stay with grandma, within a month - it was during winter - the house burnt down due to a faulty heater. So her stay was extended. Well, grandma got attached to Chloe, so I let her keep her.
My grandmother was sick with Autoimmune diseases and osteoporosis, and she was miserable. I think Chloe saved her; Chloe brought her so much joy. Grandma re-did her bedroom, and turned it into a ferret's paradise: play tubes, ferret toys, a cage (that was left open) with a hammock, cat trees and condos, beds, and Chloe got ferret food & dried fruit and baby food for snacks. Chloe loved paper towel rolls and empty thread spools, and she'd hide them under the bed, and in her "apartment," which was the underneath of grandma's chest of drawers. Grandma always called Chloe "The Teefy" (thief), because if ever she was missing her comb, a shoe, pen, or brush, it could be found hoarded under the chest of drawers, or the bed. Chloe slept at night, on a pillow on the end of grandma's bed.
Once Chloe turned 5, she got vet check ups every few months. At the age of 8, Chloe started having health problems, and that's when the vet realized Chloe was actually a male ferret - we never would've known. The vet had never treated a ferret before Chloe, so he just assumed, since she was listed as a female, that Chloe was. Chloe had a health problem that is common in old, male ferrets, and Chloe was taken in weekly to be treated for it, but it was miserable.
The vet said very little could be done, that Chloe the ferret could live like that another year, but qaulity of life would be bad. So grandma, out of mercy, had Chloe put to sleep. Chloe was cremated and put in an urn, that grandma kept. She wished to have Chloe's urn buried with her when she passed away. Chloe was, as per grandma's wishes, in July, 2012, in Bucklin, Kansas, at Bucklin Cemetery.
