Herbert L. Austin, Jr., 89, a lifelong farmer and stockman died Saturday (January 12, 2013) at the Presbyterian Manor of Arkansas City. Celebration of Life services are planned for a later date. Private interment was held in Forrest Hill Cemetery near Ashton.
Herbert was born May 24, 1923, in Sedgwick, Kansas, to Herbert L. and Vera (Daugherty) Austin. The family lived in McPherson and Wellington before moving to a farm near Portland where he attended grade school and then graduated from South Haven High School in 1941.
Herbert began helping his father with farm work at the age of eight and continued farming with his brother, Robert, until they retired 60 years later.
He is survived by his sister Margery Cully, sister-in-law Lois Austin, and five nieces and nephews - Mary and husband Tom Morton, Paul Cully, Jean and husband Rod Marrs, Cindy Ball, and Clint and wife Tracy Austin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Robert.
Memorials have been established with the Presbyterian Manor Good Samaritan Fund or the Salvation Army. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
