William J. (Capt. Bolen Bill) Hall born May 11, 1826 in Letcher County KY. and died July 28, 1912 at Beaver, Knott County KY. Bolen Bill was a Captain in Col. Ben E. Caudill's 13th KY. Cavalry.
Captain William J. "Bolen Bill" Hall was born on May 11, 1826 in Floyd County, the son of William John (Gunsmith Billy) Hall and Margaret Johnson. He married Florence Jones (1826-1908), the daughter of Clabe Jones, and together they had four children. At the time of the war, and for most of his life, he resided on Beaver Creek in Floyd County (now along Route 7 at Kite in Knott County). He enlisted as a Private in Company E of the 13th Kentucky Cavalry on October 23, 1862 near Whitesburg in Letcher County under Captain Arch Hammonds. His brother James "Stiff Jim" Hall also enlisted in Caudill's 13th Kentucky Cavalry. In April of 1863 "Bolen Bill" Hall was promoted to Sergeant. Within a few a weeks Captain Arch Hammonds resigned his command and Sgt. "Bolen Bill" Hall was elected as the new Captain of Company E. Almost immediately Captain Hall and his company were involved in "heavy fighting" with the Union's 14th Cavalry as chronicled by Lt. Clabe Jones. Captain Hall was considered an exceptionally brave fighter by his Yankee enemies. He served until the end of the war in 1865. He died on July 28, 1912.
