Dr. E.C. Gaffney, 66, who was a surgeon and physician here for nearly half a century, died at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Deaconess hospital where he had been a patient for the past nine days. A veteran of World War I in which he served in the Army, the medic was the first commander of Logan post 263 of the American Legion.

The doctor was born at Springfield, Ill., Aug. 13, 1884, the son of Dr. Emory Clark Gaffney and Antoinette Burgess. He was a graduate of Springfield high school, attended the University of Illinois and Hahnemann Medical School in Chicago.

Residing at 518 College avenue, the doctor had been a Lincoln resident for 45 years and retired from his profession in 1949. He married Ruth Katherine Ryan in Lincoln, May 19, 1909, who survives as do these children; Mrs. George Dehner, Jr., of Lincoln and First Lieut. Emory Clark Gaffney of Ellington Air Force base in Texas.
Also surviving are these brothers; Lawrence A. Gaffney of Springfield, Milton D. Gaffney of Chicago and Clifford Gaffney of Springfield. There are also three grandchildren, Betty, Nancy and Gerry Dehner. One brother, Randolph, preceded him in death.

For many years the late physician was chief of the surgical staff of Deaconess hospital. He had served as president of the Logan County Medical Society and until his retirement was surgeon for the G.M. & O. and I.T.S. railroads. His affiliations included the American Medical Society, the American Association of Railway Surgeons and the American Association of Military Surgeons.

His rank in World War I was major in the Medical Corps. He was the second president of the former Lincoln Commercial club and later headed the Chamber of Commerce. A charter member of the Kiwanis club of Lincoln, he also served it as president. He was a member of Lincoln lodge 914, B.P.O. Elks, and at one time was president of the Country club.

Not little of his time was given to work in the interest of the public schools. For 29 years he was on the elementary grade school board of education and for many of those years was its president. While practicing in his early days, he found time to coach football at Lincoln high school and Lincoln college. His church affiliation was First Presbyterian.

The body was taken to Holland and Barry Funeral home where funeral services will be Monday, June 4, at 2 p.m. (DST). In charge will be the Rev. Daniel E. Kerr of Jacksonville, former Presbyterian church pastor here; and the Rev. John T. Burns. Interment will be in Union cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday and Sunday afternoon and evening.
