At the age of 16 or 18, Samuel lost both arms while working at a sorghum mill. One just above the elbow and the other just below the elbow. The owner of the mill put him in charge of a store in Leisure, Michigan and with the help of others he had a good business. Later he had a peddling wagon, selling tin ware, socks, jackets and gloves. He would put the reins around his waist and would turn his body to steer the horses. The trusted people he sold goods to would pay him and make change by putting their money in his pocket.

It is said through the family that he adored his wife Mary and always said there was no other woman more beautiful than her.
