|Birth: ||Sep. 12, 1853, Poland|
|Death: ||Jun. 28, 1943|
John Mrozek was my maternal great-great-grandfather; he was the father of my great grandmother, Anna Blanche.
As some who link through each of my memorials will note, there are some real difficulties keeping some of our family's last names straight, and John is a prime example of what I keep running into. It is common knowledge in our family that John began using the last name 'Frost' as his last name, after coming to the U.S. from Poland, but nobody knows whether he legally changed it, nor when and how/why he completely abandoned his real name, Mrozek, for good.
If you link to his daughter Anna's page, for instance, you'll see that on her birth certificate, John is still using (what we assume is) the original family name, Mrozewska; literally every single document regarding John from this point in his life on changes from 'Mrozewska' to 'Mrozik' to 'Mrozek', etc. I have even a couple stating 'Mrozewskia' and 'Mrozewski', but that seems to have been abandoned, quickly.
John's own death certificate, posted, shows his assumed full name, by the date of his death, as 'John Mrozek Frost'; it then notes that his own father's name was simply John Mrozek.
I have put 'Mrozek' as John's middle name, then, as he seemed to use it as such - but it is in fact, his original last name.
As mentioned, the family knew of this name switch and it was never suggested that John had changed his name for nefarious reasons of any sort - he and his wife simply felt prejudiced against when first arriving from Poland, supposedly, and so began using first an Americanized version of Mrozewska/Mrozewski, and then simply switched completely to 'Frost'.
Also, lastly - the death certificate states that John was born in Wisconsin. This is absolutely incorrect; his daughter Anna was the first family member to be born in the U.S., and her linked birth certificate is very clear is stating that she was born in Minnesota, and her parents John and Mary both were from Prussia.
John's occupation is repeatedly listed in various documents as 'carpenter'; his own father, a 'John Mrozek', and the name of his mother 'unobtainable'.
John died in Spokane, Washington and is buried there.
