Mike Belonger was a Civil War veteran and Wisconsin farmer. Born in Vermont, he moved as a child to Shullsburg, Wisconsin, and lived his whole life there save for a stint in the Union army. He and his wife, Mary, raised one son, John, and nine daughters: Julia, Regina, Mary, Ida, Frances, Ellen, Elizabeth, Bridget, and Clara.
Mike was the only one of six Belonger brothers to stay in Wisconsin. The others altered the family surname to "Blonger" and went west to find fame and fortune. One brother, Lou Blonger, became notorious as the king of Denver's underworld until his arrest in 1922.
