John was born Johann Heinrich Duetsch June 21 1824 in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. On December 2, 1849 in Gudow, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany he was married to Anna Catherina Elizabeth Wangelin (1825-1908). The 1900 US Census records that they immigrated in 1854 but the 1850 US Census for Brockway, St. Clair Co., Michigan records a John Dutsch working for a lumberman. Exactly what happened in those years between 1850 and 1860 is uncertain but if John was, in fact, in St. Clair Co. in 1850 it appears he returned home to Germany to bring his family to America. There is an immigration record of a John Duetsch departing Germany with "Frau" and infant child on April 1. 1854. By the Census in 1860, the Duetsch family was settled on their own farm in Casco, St. Clair Co., Michigan.

John and Elizabeth had three children who lived to adulthood:
Johann Wilhelm 1855-1931
"H.C." Joachim Heinrich Carl 1860-1916
Caroline Maria 1861-1914 (John Henry Koch)

John Duetsch died February 24, 1909 at the age of 85 and is buried at the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Peters, St. Clair Co., Michigan.
