George L. Hess joined the United States Navy directly after graduating from high school in 1955. Much of his four year enlistment was served at Guantanamo Navel Station in Cuba when Castro overthrew Batista.
Upon his returning to civilian life, he married Patricia Hornbuckle in 1959. They had three children. He was employed by Condee Gas, Electric and Refrigeration in Mt. Sterling, Brown County, Illinois. In 1969 the Condee Company decided to start a branch on the then newly developing Marco Island in Florida. George, being single again, was asked if he would go. He met Jeaneen Hollingshead, a single mother who was employed as Office Administrator in the Condee Company for 10 years.
George arrived on Marco Island in January 1969 and on March 20, 1969 he and Jeaneen were married in Naples, Collier County, Florida. In June of 1969 George, Jeaneen and her son Michael packed up and moved permanently to the island. At that time, there was only one 10 story condominum, no grocery stores, no banks, only one gas station and a 7-11 and very few permanent residents or houses. As the island grew so did Condee Cooling and Electric. It started with just George and Jeaneen and currently has over 30 employees. George helped build the company as its General Manager. He had been a 'Condee Man' for almost 40 years until his untimely death at age 61.
His only hobby was his work and his Harley Davidson that he purchased 10 years earlier. He was a 'Sunday Rider'. Almost every Sunday you could find him riding with the other riders from Marco Island.
November 1st, 1998 was another beautiful Sunday morning and the group decided to ride into two other counties for lunch. In Hendry County, a young man passed a large van and hit two Marco bikers head-on killing them both instantly. George was one of them. His funeral was held at the Wesley United Methodist Church on Marco Island of which he and Jeaneen were founding members in 1971. Over 500 people filled the church including 60 ABATE bikers who came on their cycles from all over the area.
George was well known amongst the businesses and general population and his wife Jeaneen had been the Administrator of the Art Center of Marco Island for over 20 years. It was a fitting service for a gentle giant known for his fairness and trustworthy dealing in business. He would have been amazed at the outpouring of the community. He was survived by his wife, four children. Penny (Mark Ebbing), Amy (Andy Newton, Doug Hess and step-son Michael Hollingshead (Shelly) and grandchildren Lucas and Alex Ebbing, Adam and Aaron Newton, Patrick, Corey and Casey Joyce Hollingshead, his brother Dick of Spokane, WA and sister, Marilyn of Mt. Sterling, IL and nieces and nephews. Also his best buddy 'Harley D' (dachshund) and many, many friends.
He was pre-deceased by his parents.
