Son of Maurice Bennett and Mary Ellen Mullen, he lived at 50 Hamburg St. in Buffalo's 1st ward and worked as a clerk, draughtsman and a grocer at 2 Euclid Place before taking over his father's grocery at 210 Abbott Road (now on South Park Avenue) in Buffalo NY. He married his first wife, Mary Louise Hoover (1800-1903) on June 18, 1902 in Our Lady of Perpetual Help RC church in Buffalo NY. She passed away about 13 months later. They had no children together. His second wife was Louisa (Lulu) Agnes McGrath (1880-1949), whom he married around 1905. Lulu gave birth to 5 children, of which 3 survived to an adult age. Around 1908, Jim set up a saloon at 221 Abbott and sold coal and wood at 243 Abbott. He was admitted to Dr. Dunham’s Sanitarium on Nov. 28, 1911. After more than 2 months of treatment by Dr. Thomas G. Allen, he passed away, age 32. The immediate causes of death were recorded as albuminuria and kidney lesion, with endocarditis indicated as a contributing factor. He left behind his wife, three children (Edward, Marie and James) and five siblings: Mary Rose (aka May, wife of Nicholas Donahue), Frances (wife of James Furlong), David, Maurice and Loretta Bennett. A funeral was held at the family residence (210 Abbott), followed by a service at St. Stephen's RC church.
