Charles Thomas Conrad, son of Elizabeth (Raeubig) and Thomas Conrad, married Marguerite Alta "Peggy" Harding, daughter of Ruth Christine (Johnson) and Dr. John Henry Harding, May 27, 1938, in a formal wedding at Wealthy Street Baptist Church, Grand Rapids, Kent Co.,MI.
Charles was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI. He met his wife while both were attending Wealthy Street Baptist Church in Grand Rapids, a GARB Church led for many years by Dr. David Otis Fuller. He graduated from the Johnson City Baptist Seminary in Johnson City, NY, in 1943. Charles served as a Baptist minister at the Central Baptist Church in Gary, IN; the First Baptist Church of Strathmore, CA; the First Baptist Church in Hayward, CA; Castlemont Baptist Church in Oakland, CA; and the Calvary Baptist Church of Longview, Washington. After retirement in 1984, he and Peggy eventually returned to live permanently in Strathmore, their first ministry in California.
Charles was a powerful preacher and had a wonderful singing voice. He was really never allowed to retire, because he was always substituting for some other Baptist minister away from his pulpit temporarily. Every ministry should have a devoted servant like the Rev. Charles T. Conrad, and every family should have a devoted family member like Uncle Charles, whose grand-niece, Leslie Schuessler, called "Uncle Charlers" for several years until she finally mastered pronouncing his first name. The example of his life, and that of his wife, remain an inspiration for their extended family today.
Charles and Peggy Conrad were the parents of four children: Charles James Harding "Chuck", Judith Elizabeth "Judy", Galen Richard, and James Phillip "Jim".
