June 4, 2009 K. Charles "Chuck" McGeary, 83, of Naples, FL, died Thursday, June 4, 2009. He was born August 26, 1925, in Verona, PA. His wife, Carol (Beisel) McGeary, survives him. Other survivors include his stepchildren, David Benson of Troy, NY, and Sally McCullen of Chesapeake, VA; his grandchildren, Alexandra and Noelle Benson, and Matthew and Christian McCullen; his brothers, Frank of Melbourne, FL, Clyde of Camp Hill, PA, and Raymond of Carlisle, PA; and his sister, Martha Pifer of Wexford, PA. Mr. McGeary was predeceased by his parents, Martha and Charles E. McGeary, as well as his brother, Glenn. He attended Springdale High School with the Class of 1944 and left early, during WWII, to join the Navy. He served in the Pacific Theatre on an LCSL. He was one of the first detachments of U.S. military to be sent to Tokyo, Japan. Upon discharge from the Navy, he returned to his family home in Cheswick, PA. He enrolled at Syracuse University and graduated in the Class of 1951 as a journalism major. While at Syracuse, a school that he learned to love, he played football proudly as a tackle for the renowned "Big Orange" team coached by Ben Schwartzwalder. After graduation, "Chuck" remained in Syracuse with a career in radio, advertising and public relations. Continuing his devotion to the "Orange Pack," Chuck was an ardent fan of all sports, especially football and lacrosse at his alma mater. While living in Syracuse, Chuck served as a deacon at Park Central Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed travel as well as participation in New York's Scottish Games. His special interests included the art of short stories as well as history, especially that of the Gettysburg campaign of the Civil War.
