KINSMAN OF LOCAL FOLKS BURIED AT BRITT LAST FRIDAY.
John E. Stevenson, uncle of Mrs. William Krause, Mrs. George Rowe and E.G. Stevenson of the vicinity died at his home at Britt Tuesday, February 12, at 11:30 o'clock following an illness of a few hours from acute indigestion. Mr Stevenson, who was born in Huron County, Ohio, May 20, 1846, was 82 years, 8 months and 22 days at the time of his death.
At nine years of age he came with his parents from Ohio and settled in Linn county, Iowa. Putting one winter behind them, the family pressed forward in the spring to the then Bremer County. It was in this county he grew to manhood and was married on May 5, 1872, to Miss Evelyn McClelland. The young couple moved to the farm one and three-quarter miles north of Finnell chapel just over the Chickasaw County line. Here they stayed until Mrs. Stevenson's death in 1885. Three daughters were born to this union, all of whom survive the father. They are Mrs. W.H. Michener of Rosholt, South Dakota, Mrs. E.F. Klein of Gully, Minnesota, and Mrs. C.E. Baker of Mount Vernon, Iowa.
He married again in 1886 on February 10 to Miss Phoebe Dickey, sister to Mrs. E.C. Bennett, Tripoli, who survives him. Their wedding took place at Fredericksburg [or New Hampton?] and they lived near that town on a farm for twelve years. In March 1898 they settled on their own farm southeast of Britt where they resided until retiring and moving to Britt. Two children were born to this union: Mrs. R.L. McMillan at Orlovista, Florida, and Harold in Britt. Besides the children there are left fifteen grandchildren and one brother, Rinaldo Stevenson of Spokane, Washington.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. last Friday at the Britt Methodist Church and burial was made in Evergreen Cemetery at Britt. Owing to roads the relatives were unable to attend.
