Leander Phelps, 73, died at his home in West Van Lear at 7:20 a.m. after a year's illness. A native of Johnson County, he was born July 5, 1885, to Aquilla Phelps and Sarah Sallie Dye Hickey Phelps. He had lived at West Van Lear for the past 44 years. He had formerly worked as a miner, and was also employed for several years at the Paintsville Hospital. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Virgie Honeycutt Phelps; one son, James P. Phelps, Louisville; one daughter, Hazel G (John) Sammons, West Van Lear; two brothers, John Phelps, Van Lear; and Adolphus "Dolphy" Phelps, Elk City, OK. Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 Monday afternoon from the West Van Lear Missionary Baptist Church with Howard Reuter as officiating minister. Burial was in the Richmond Cemetery.
