Frances Jane Pilcher was born in Kiowa County, Oklahoma on November 17, 1912. She was the third child and first girl born to Josiah Micagah (J.M. or "Cage") Pilcher and Lillie Mae Fleming Pilcher. Frances was most likely named after her maternal grandmother, Sarah 'Frances' Dunnegan Fleming.
After Josiah's retirement from teaching in 1919, the Pilcher family moved from Hobart, OK, to Carter, OK, a thirty-mile trip that took an entire day. They raised livestock, wheat, and cotton on their 320-acre farm.
Frances Jane was a sickly child and only lived to the age of 11-1/2. Her younger sister, Betty, said that Frances died from some sort of kidney disease, or renal failure that was due to some other disease process. Any photos of her or records of her health were unfortunately lost in 1926, when the family home completely burned to the ground.
