Millard F. Monteith, 68, retired Waterville businessman and farmer, died Dec. 16, 1963 at his home in Waterville, KS.
He was born on a farm south of Blue Rapids on Oct. 3, 1895, the son of John A. and Sarah Fincham Monteith. As a child he moved with his parents to a farm in the Winifred area where he grew to manhood. He farmed while he was a youth, and later was employed in Winifred and at Blue Rapids. In 1918 he moved to Waterville to work with his brother, Walter Monteith, who established a Chevrolet agency there.
In 1929 he assumed the franchise for the John Deere Implement Co. at the garage, and then moved to the present location of the Golden Rule store produce building in Waterville. In 1935 the expanding business was moved to the Charles Hager building in which he operated until he sold out to Fred Dummermuth in 1950. The deceased continued his extensive farming activities until his retirement in 1959.
He married Bessie Crissman on Sept. 29, 1935 in Chapman, Dickinson County, KS. He was a member of Sutton Lodge No. 85, A.F. and A.M. and of Pawnee Lodge No. 108, I.O.O.F.
He was survived by his widow of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Critchlow of Blue Rapids, KS and Mrs. Bernice Schrock of Denver, CO.; and two brothers, W. W. Monteith of Waterville and Merle Monteith of Oxford,KS.
Funeral services were held at Waterville Methodist Church Thursday at 2 p.m. with Rev. J. Richard Williams officiating. Mrs. C. H. Youngberg sang "The Lord's Prayer" and Merle Reitzel and Mrs. Youngberg sang, "Beyond the Sunset" with Mrs. A. N. McAtee at the organ.
Casket bearers were George Benfield, W. L. Wanamaker, Fred Dummermuth, Fred Youngstedt, Leslie Honstead and Roland Peterson. Honorary bearers were Arthur Roepke, William A. Nelson, William Summers, Walter Roepke, LeRoy Schuchart, Arthur Geyer, and Carl Sawin.
Representatives of Sutton Lodge No. 85 A.F. and A.M. attended in a body. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery, Waterville, KS with arrangements by Youngbergs.
