Son of John Gurley and Bridget Moran, both of County Galway, Ireland. James was born in Allykeolaun, County Galway, Ireland in 1835 and came to the United States in the 1850's. He married Mary Ann Broderick January 27, 1856 at St. John The Evangelist Catholic Church in Concord, N.H. and had three children with her. Ann died between 1870 and 1880, then James married Mary Nichols on October 1, 1885. James died from the effects of Rheumatic Fever in 1888.
