"Crashes Kill 6; Hurt 8
Mrs. Stella Cook was instantly killed Saturday night on the Seattle highway near Fife, when the car of Gene Sweeting struck the rear end of a truck which allegedly carried no lantern or tail light. Motorcycle Officer Orval Stilsworth, off duty, witnessed the accident and said that Mrs. Cook's body was hurled 30 feet along the highway by the impact.
The truck, Stilsworth charged, continued nearly a mile from the scene of the accident before being forced to halt by motorists. Charles Pehlin, Seattle contractor, owning the vehicle, was booked at the sheriff's office, where he claimed that a red lantern had been fastened to the rear of the truck at the time it started from Tacoma. No trace of the lantern could be found at the scene of the crash, investing officers said. Pehlin's driver, whose name was not learned, did not appear at the sheriff's office, but was to come here from Seattle Monday with Mr. Pehlin for an investigation. It was stated by Byron D. Scott, deputy prosecuting attorney, in charge of the case."
