Philip came to New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1894 at the age of nine. He attended school, but quit at age 16 to go to work, about 1901. (However, 1930 United States Census gives his year of immigration as 1903.)
He later went to night school to get a business education. At age 21,1906, he had his own little grocery store on Wood Street in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
When Philip was 22 years old, in New Bedford, MA 1907, he married his first wife, Maria Cardoza Santos, also born on Pico Island, Azores, Portugal. She was a housewife and did dressmaking. The 1930 United States Census gives Maria's year of immigration to America as 1900. She was the mother of his two children who were both born in California: Maria "Mamie" Cardoza (Fonseca) Medeiros (1909-1991)and Nelson Philip Cardoza Fonceca (1920-1990).
First wife Maria Santos Fonseca died in New Bedford, MA on 28 December 1933 at the age of 55. She didn't like living in California, so the family had moved back to New Bedford.
Philip married his second wife, Mary C. Bateh, in New Bedford, MA in 1934. Mary could neither read nor write in English, only in Portuguese. They moved to Hollister, California first. Then in 1936 they settled in San Jose, California, where they bought a home and Philip began another business.
He had purchased a recipe for making bleach water. In 1936 he began production founding the P-C Bleaching Water Company. He had several bleach trucks. He retired from the bleach business in 1955. The company was sold to Clorox in San Jose.
