Lost at Sea, U. S. Navy after the battle of Leyte Gulf, South Pacific, the largest naval battle in history; The U.S.S. Columbia was
located at Lingayen Gulf, Philippines on 9 January 1945. Gene was killed in action.
It is said that he was killed while on fire duty in a crow's nest when the ship was hit by the Japanese Kamakazi plane. The kamikaze, knocked out six gun directors and gun mount. 24 men were killed and 97 wounded.
His Military Service Flag is buried with his mother, Lula Grace (Reeder) Jennings-Wray, at Page Cemetery, Washita County, Oklahoma. His name is listed on the headstone with his parents-Charlie and Lula.
