Thelma was born to Marvin Clarence Iverson and Anna Martha Solem. The family moved to the Decorah, IA area in 1930 where she graduated from Decorah High School. She taught in Iowa for four years and then attended nursing school in Minneapolis, MN after which she worked as a nanny.

Thelma married Milford Sheldahl on August 14, 1938, graduated from Lutheran Bible Institute in 1940 and attended Luther College in Decorah. With her pastor husband, she moved to many communities, aiding him in his pastoral work. After his death she continued living in Fargo until 1999 when she moved into the Sunrise Estates home in Park River, ND and died in the Good Samaritan Center in Park River.
