Les Amick was born on the Westside of Indianapolis on April 28, 1921. It was in his first year at Washington High School, while helping a friend put up hay in a barn, the track broke that held a double harpoon hurling the harpoon in his back. He underwent an operation, without anesthetic, and was then paralyzed from his ribs down. After time and rehabilitation, Les finally was able to walk again, but with extreme pain the rest of his life. He took four years of electronics and then went to Barber School. He never really knew why, other than his love of people, that he made that choice. Les met his wife, Bernice while they both worked at N.Y.A. in 1940 and married on March 7, 1942. She survives. He has a daughter Sandra Trisler, and two grandchildren, Randy Tucker and Angel Woods, three great granddaughters, Alicia and Laura Tucker, and Amber Woods, granddaughter-in-law, Debbie Tucker, sister, Betty Johnson, and sister-in-laws, Lavone Amick, Zell Catanzerite, Reba Smith and Linda Emberton. He also has three step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren, by Sandra's marriage to Ron Trisler. Les had his barbershop 51 years at 1711 W. Morris St. He was a member of the Exchange Club from 1955 and served as president from 1969-1970. In 1970 the Exchange Club started their biggest project, the Southwest Health Center, which is now a part of the Clarian Health Group. During his 10-year tenure as President of the Southwest Health Center, he was instrumental in starting the West Indianapolis Neighborhood Community Center. A memorial service will be at 7:30 p.m. Wed., June 15 at G.H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home, 1605 S. St. Rd. 135, with visitation from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wed. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
