George Bates Underwood is the son of Charles Frederick Underwood and Martha Ann Wilson. Family story about Charles, he was a gambler. Am told he once owned a coal mine and lost it in a card game. Supposedly Charles was in Linton, Indiana playing cards at a table. A Charlie Reatherford (spelling?) accused Charles of cheating, stood up and shot and killed him. No newspaper or anything documenting any of this has been found.

Charles was born October 1874 in Roane County, TN, died per tradition, March 1905 in Linton, Greene County, Indiana. Charles and Martha was married Cir. 1893.
